The encounter between trumpeter Alberto Mandarini and pianist Daniele Tione has been occasioned by an exhibition of a cartoon biography of the beloved and worldwide famous trumpeter Louis Armstrong, signed by the comic-strip artist Philip Paquet, a new talent among the Belgian panorama of cartoonists.
The duo has marked this event with concerts opened by some of the most famous tunes usually played and sung by Armstrong, playing them as a real tribute, gradually adjusting them to the musicians’ own stylistic choices.
It is indeed on these apparently antithetical assumptions that the sound
and the repertory of the duo have taken shape, both about the exposition of the themes, most of which originals, and upon the development of improvisation, one moment sticking to the afro-american musical roots, then to the European learned-music cliché.
